Self-Study 001
Artist Statement
An aching yearning for something of grace, this piece comes after years of struggle and strife.
In the journey of becoming, we fight for what we believe in; and for me a significant part of my twenties was a fight for freedom and sovereignty. In an ambitious, grit filled climb, I ascended the mountain of economic hardships and destabilised living conditions, seeking a sense of expansiveness within the confines of my own contracting world.
Attempt after attempt, risk after risk, I continuously felt worst off. Nothing seemed to be working. Good deeds and thoughtful action felt fruitless, well-intentioned steps and considered strategies seemed to lead me to living conditions that reflected the very opposite of what my heart ached for.
These years of sacrifice and youthful grief left me yearning for the feminine principles of softness, ease, peace, pleasure and grace. Wishing the tides would turn, this painful patriarchal pursuit was heavy on my soul.
But this reflects more than just my personal pursuit. There is a collective pain here, too; reflective of a time dominated by the suppressive shadows of masculine forces, where greed and power squashes the human spirit, predatory men cling to their control and economic structures demand relentless striving.
I long for the matriarch to return us to the land, to community, to each other. I yearn for the goddess to bring restoration to nature and to our souls. And selfishly, for the divine to show me my efforts have not been in vain, that refusing to give up and give in was for the greater good; that holding on to my sensitivity and creativity was not a burden in this world.
Much of my work as an artist, and as a man, revels in the beauty of femininity. My work is a devotional act to the goddess in life and the goddesses in my life.
The first artwork of Self-Study is in honour of, and devotion to, the feminine: this principle of Yin. The force that has ignited purpose in me like no other.
